Florence is home to some of Italy’s most beautiful boutique hotels, and Hotel La Gemma stands out for its blend of contemporary design, personalized service, and prime location in the historic center. In this edition of our Checking In series, I share my stay at this elegant Florentine retreat, from beautifully designed rooms and Michelin-starred dining to the moments that make the experience memorable.

Nestled in the heart of Florence, Hotel La Gemma invites guests to experience a blend of modern luxury and timeless elegance. Owned by the Cecchi family, this five-star boutique hotel offers a highly personalized stay that reflects the vibrant culture and rich heritage of the Renaissance city.
During my stay, I found Hotel La Gemma to be a peaceful retreat in the middle of Florence’s lively historic center. Whether visiting for a romantic getaway, a cultural adventure, or simply a moment to slow down, the hotel provides a refined base with thoughtful amenities, attentive service, and a sense of understated luxury.
The Stay

At Hotel La Gemma, comfort and design take center stage. The hotel features 39 beautifully designed rooms and suites, each created with the idea that the space should feel like a small Florentine masterpiece.
Designed by leading Italian designers, the interiors reflect Florence’s artistic legacy while incorporating modern comforts. I appreciated how the rooms balance elegance with warmth, creating an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and inviting.
For travelers looking to indulge, the Signature Rooms feature thoughtful details such as a complimentary minibar and even a cocktail station, perfect for a relaxed evening after exploring the city. Superior Rooms offer an equally comfortable experience with plush beds and soundproof windows that ensure a peaceful night’s sleep despite the hotel’s central location.
For a more elevated stay, Deluxe Rooms and Junior Suites include marble bathrooms, in-room iPads, and comfortable seating areas ideal for unwinding after a day of sightseeing. The Loft Suite and Prestige Suite take things a step further with elevated design and additional space, while the Executive Suite and Two Room Suites are particularly well suited for families or small groups traveling together.
My Favorite 90 Seconds

One of my favorite moments of the stay actually happened right at check-in. After arriving at Hotel La Gemma, I was welcomed with a simple yet thoughtful offering of chips and green olives — the kind of small Italian hospitality detail that immediately sets the tone. I ordered an Aperol Spritz and sat for a few moments soaking in the atmosphere, feeling that wonderful shift from travel mode into vacation mode.
Later in the stay, another small ritual became equally memorable: returning to my room in the evening and taking a long bath after a full day walking Florence’s cobblestone streets. It was the perfect way to slow down and reset before heading back out into the city the next morning.
The Moments That Make It

Breakfast quickly became one of my favorite parts of the stay. Mornings felt relaxed and unhurried, with excellent coffee and hot dishes like Eggs Benedict and warm pastries, a simple but satisfying way to start the day before heading out to explore Florence.

Hotel La Gemma goes beyond simply providing a beautiful place to stay. Through its Golden Key Club, the hotel offers curated experiences that allow guests to explore Tuscany in memorable ways.
The concierge team can arrange everything from private wine tastings at local vineyards to hands-on cooking classes focused on authentic Italian cuisine. For something truly unforgettable, guests can even experience Tuscany from above with a hot air balloon ride over the rolling countryside.
Of course, part of what makes the stay special is the location itself. The hotel is just steps away from some of Florence’s most iconic landmarks, meaning the city’s art, architecture, and luxury boutiques are always within easy reach.

Dining also plays a central role in the experience. At Luca’s Restaurant, Michelin-starred chef Paulo Airaudo brings a modern perspective to classic Florentine cuisine. The elegant Art Deco dining room, with velvet chairs and a striking illuminated wine wall, sets the tone for a memorable meal that feels both refined and welcoming.

After a day of exploring the city, I also appreciated spending time at the Allure Spa. Known for its treatments using Biologique Recherche products, the spa offers personalized facials, massages, and full-body rituals designed to restore and recharge. With its hydrotherapy pool and aromatic saunas, it provides a peaceful escape from the energy of Florence.
Who This Hotel Is Actually For

Hotel La Gemma feels particularly well suited for travelers who appreciate boutique luxury and thoughtful design.
Couples looking for a romantic Florentine escape will find the intimate atmosphere especially appealing, while travelers interested in art, culture, and food will appreciate the hotel’s proximity to Florence’s most celebrated museums and landmarks.
It is also an excellent option for those who prefer a smaller, design-forward hotel rather than a large resort-style property.
