Set along a lush stretch of Caribbean coastline about 40 minutes from Cancun International Airport, Grand Velas Riviera Maya is one of the most celebrated all-inclusive resorts in the region.

The property has earned the coveted AAA Five Diamond Award and is known for offering an elevated all-inclusive experience that blends luxury accommodations, destination dining, and a world-class spa.
Surrounded by tropical jungle and white sand beaches, the resort is designed as three distinct experiences, each offering a slightly different atmosphere depending on the type of stay you’re looking for.
The Stay

Grand Velas Riviera Maya features 539 suites, and every accommodation is impressively spacious: more than 1,100 square feet, each with a private terrace or balcony.
Grand Velas Riviera Maya is divided into three distinct experiences, each with its own atmosphere. Grand Class sits closest to the ocean and is designed primarily for adults seeking a more romantic beachfront stay, while Ambassador is the family-friendly section with spacious suites near the beach and expansive terraces. Lastly, there is the Zen Grand Experience, which is set deeper within the tropical jungle and feels more secluded and restorative, almost like its own private oasis within the larger resort. I stayed in a Grand Class Suite overlooking the ocean.

My suite was incredibly spacious, with more than enough room to fully settle in rather than just pass through. The large balcony was one of my favorite parts of the stay, offering a quiet outdoor space that made the room feel even more removed from everything.
Inside, the suite featured a large marble bathroom with a rainfall shower and oversized jetted tub as well as details like plush bedding, a stocked minibar, and evening turndown service.
I also loved the gorgeous artisanal treats delivered to my room each evening, pictured below.

Beyond the room itself, small moments helped define the stay like sipping a mudslide poolside and joining a guacamole-making class.

My Favorite 90 Seconds
My favorite moment during the stay happened inside the mint ice room at SE Spa.
After moving through the hydrotherapy circuit, including steam, sauna, warm pools, and sensory showers, stepping into the mint ice room felt like a complete reset. The sharp, cooling scent of mint makes the experience even more invigorating. It is one of those rare spa moments that feels both soothing and energizing at once.

The Water Ceremony includes the mint ice room as part of its hydrotherapy journey, which also features a eucalyptus-scented steam room with chromotherapy, a polar pool, and sensory showers.
What stayed with me most was the scent. Even now, I can still remember that crisp mint in the air and the instant contrast between the warmth of the earlier circuit and the coolness of that room. I have visited many spas since, but I still have not experienced anything quite like it again.
The Moments That Make It

One of the things that sets Grand Velas Riviera Maya apart from many all-inclusive resorts is the quality and variety of its dining and wellness experiences.
The resort is home to eight restaurants, including several gourmet venues that take guests through different culinary traditions. Azul serves a generous breakfast and lunch buffet with both international and Mexican specialties, while Chaká focuses on lighter, wellness-driven dishes. For a more refined evening experience, Cocina de Autor, led by Chef Nahúm Velasco, presents an inventive tasting menu that pushes beyond what most travelers expect from an all-inclusive resort.
One of the standout experiences at Grand Velas Riviera Maya is SE Spa, a 90,000-square-foot wellness sanctuary inspired by the cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula.
During my stay, I experienced the Bacal Massage, one of the spa’s Mayan-inspired treatments. The ritual begins with a honey exfoliation, followed by an essential oil massage using Mayan corncobs to apply pressure in a way that feels both unexpected and deeply grounding. Because corn was considered sacred in Mayan culture, the treatment feels genuinely connected to place.

After spa treatments, guests are often served Tea Forté teas alongside small energy bites prepared by the spa’s culinary team. The bites are made with nutrient-dense ingredients like dates, oats, honey, cacao, matcha, nuts, and superfoods such as maca and acai. Variations include cacao, cranberry-orange, carrot, and matcha-pistachio, each designed as a healthy post-treatment snack that restores energy without feeling heavy.
Who This Hotel Is Actually For
Grand Velas Riviera Maya works especially well for travelers who want the ease of an all-inclusive resort without sacrificing luxury or culinary quality.
Couples often gravitate toward the Grand Class section, which offers a quieter beachfront experience and feels particularly suited to romantic getaways.

Families tend to enjoy the Ambassador and Zen areas, where kid-friendly programming, spacious suites, and activities like the Kids’ Club and Teen Lounge create plenty to do throughout the day.
Because the resort offers multiple atmospheres within one property, it manages to appeal to both couples and families without either group feeling out of place.
