Checking In | Maison Rouge, Strasbourg

I checked in to Maison Rouge for a weekend of rest, with the intention of enjoying Strasbourg at my own pace while also making the most of the hotel itself. Rather than filling every moment with sightseeing, I wanted time to walk, wander, eat well, and then come back to the hotel and actually slow down.

That turned out to be an easy rhythm to find. Strasbourg invites you to explore on foot, and I spent much of my weekend doing exactly that: walking through the historic center, browsing the shops, stopping at the bouquinistes in the squares, picking up a bottle of wine from a local caviste, and wandering through La Petite France. But after several hours on my feet, I was just as happy to return to Maison Rouge.

What makes the hotel particularly enjoyable for a weekend like this is that it never feels disconnected from the energy of the city, yet it gives you plenty of ways to step away from it. The restaurant and bar are lively and welcoming, while the rooms and spa offer a much quieter atmosphere. By the end of my stay, I found myself enjoying that change of pace as much as the city itself.

The Stay

Maison Rouge is located on Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, right in the heart of Strasbourg’s Grande Île, making it remarkably easy to explore the city on foot. The hotel has 131 rooms and suites, and its interiors combine Art Deco influences with contemporary comfort.

My room was spacious and beautifully designed, with a large bathroom and a separate toilet. What surprised me most was how quiet it was.

Even if my room faced the street, where the Strasbourg tram passes, I barely heard anything once the window was closed. After spending the day surrounded by the movement of the city, coming back to such a peaceful room felt like a small luxury in itself.

There was also something immediately reassuring about the atmosphere at Maison Rouge. The team was welcoming and attentive, but never stiff or overly formal. The hotel has a sense of service without losing its warmth. It feels dynamic without becoming hectic, and elegant without becoming intimidating.

Breakfast was another highlight. Alongside the full buffet, guests can choose one additional dish from the menu, which is a detail I found particularly enjoyable. One morning, I ordered eggs Benedict with trout; the next, I had an avocado toast. The eggs Benedict were the standout for me, and having the choice of a made-to-order dish alongside the buffet made breakfast feel much more generous than a standard hotel morning.

My Favorite 90 Seconds

My favorite ninety seconds at Maison Rouge came after a full day of walking around Strasbourg.

I had spent hours exploring the city on foot, moving from one neighborhood to another, browsing shops and bookstalls, then I returned to the hotel and slipped into the jacuzzi in the spa.

There was something wonderfully simple about those few minutes. The day’s walking finally caught up with me, and the warmth of the water made everything slow down. After spending hours taking in Strasbourg, I no longer needed to see anything. I could simply relax.

That moment captured Maison Rouge for me better than any grand gesture could have.

The hotel sits in the middle of a lively city, but it gives you somewhere peaceful to retreat to when you are ready to stop exploring.

The Moments That Make It

The spa became one of the most memorable parts of my stay. Located within the hotel, the 150-square-meter wellness space includes a sauna, hammam, jacuzzi, and sensory shower, creating a natural transition from the energy of Strasbourg to a much slower rhythm.

I also had a 30-minute massage focusing on my back and legs on Sunday morning. After spending the previous day walking around Strasbourg for hours, it was exactly what I needed. There was something particularly satisfying about beginning the final morning of my stay by taking care of tired legs rather than immediately heading back into the city.

The hotel’s restaurant and bar provide a completely different atmosphere. I had dinner at the 1387, where I started with a chilled pea and mint velouté with light fresh goat cheese cream and hazelnut pieces, followed by linguine with pistachio pesto and sautéed prawns. The restaurant has a more animated energy than the spa, and that contrast works well for Maison Rouge.

One evening, I also stopped on the bar’s terrace for a drink. My husband had a rum while I chose a Baileys, and we simply sat and enjoyed the evening. It was one of those uncomplicated hotel moments that does not need to be turned into an event.

That may be what I appreciated most about Maison Rouge: there are different moods within the same property. You can have a lively dinner, sit outside for a drink, retreat into the quiet of your room, or spend an hour in the spa. Nothing feels forced.

Who This Hotel Is Actually For

Maison Rouge is particularly well suited to travelers who want to explore Strasbourg primarily on foot but still want a comfortable place to retreat to at the end of the day.

It works especially well for couples, weekend travelers, food lovers, and anyone who enjoys balancing sightseeing with wellness. The central location makes it easy to spend the day discovering the city, while the spa gives you a reason to slow down before dinner.

I would particularly recommend it to travelers who appreciate a hotel with two distinct sides: one that feels lively and social, and another that is calm and restorative.

For me, that balance was the real appeal. Strasbourg gave me plenty to see, taste, browse, and discover. Maison Rouge gave me somewhere to pause.
