I checked in to La Gemma, a 39-room boutique hotel in the heart of Florence, expecting an elegant stay in one of Italy's most beautiful cities. What I did not expect was to feel quite so pampered.
There are plenty of luxury hotels in Florence, but La Gemma has something more difficult to create: the feeling of being welcomed into an exceptionally beautiful family home, where every detail has been considered and the level of service makes you feel, just for a little while, like a princess.
That feeling became the thread running through my stay. It was not about grand gestures. It was in the small things, the moments of care that made me feel looked after from morning until night.

La Gemma occupies a historic palazzo in the heart of Florence, but it does not feel like a museum piece. The interiors combine the character of the building with contemporary Italian design, rich colors, beautiful materials, and an unmistakable sense of personality.
With just 39 rooms and suites, the hotel has an intimate scale that helps explain its residential feeling. There is none of the anonymity that can sometimes come with a large luxury property. Instead, La Gemma feels warm, elegant, and personal.
My room immediately gave me that impression. The design is sophisticated without becoming overly formal, with beautiful fabrics, marble, soft lighting, and carefully selected details. It felt like somewhere I could genuinely settle into rather than simply admire.
But what really distinguished the stay for me was the service. La Gemma is a family-owned property, and there is something particularly appealing about experiencing that family spirit alongside such a high level of hospitality. My favorite ninety seconds at La Gemma happened every evening.
I would come back to my room and find my bed turned down, with slippers waiting neatly at the foot of the bed and a small biscuit placed on my pillow.
It was such a simple gesture, but it made me smile every time.
After a full day of walking around Florence, seeing the Duomo, wandering through streets and museums, and taking in everything the city has to offer, coming back to that little scene felt wonderfully comforting. For a moment, I really did feel like a princess.

Chef Paulo Airaudo's cuisine is creative and sophisticated, while the wine pairings turned the meal into a full experience rather than simply dinner.
What I loved was how the experience felt both refined and warm, never overly formal. It was the kind of dinner that becomes part of the memory of a stay, another example of the thoughtful hospitality that made me feel so special at La Gemma.
What I appreciated most was that none of these moments felt disconnected from one another. The spa, the dinner, the room, the evening turndown: each contributed to the same feeling of being genuinely cared for.
